One thing I wish Churches knew about their social media?

Wow, really, just one thing?

There’s so much to be said!

From how much to post to what platforms to engage in first to accurately adding your information wherever you do show up online to video to permissions to doing this all with a limited staff or leadership, but OKAY – one thing, I got it.

Before I drop the one thing, can I just say that we talk about each of those OTHER things in our Do It Yourself Digital Communications Review course that is now live, with a special launch week discount!

But the one thing I wish churches knew about their social media has got to be that social media is not just a fad or a way to be hip. I think some pastors and church leaders think that the only reason other pastors and church leaders are online is to try to keep up with the trends and be cool…

But social media is LITERALLY where people spend their time. Like, statistically.

And it is worth learning how to invest in and engage with our people here.

This doesn’t mean we get rid of the in-person opportunities. Not if they’re working for you.

But it does mean we learn to shift some priorities to this new frontier – one where our people already are. We learn how to connect in new ways – not necessarily better or worse ways, just different ways. Important ways to our people.

And yes, we dive into social media a whole bunch more in our Digital Ministry Training Hub, as well as entire modules on church websites, branding, video, direct communications and more… but for now, ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you just posting about your in-person activities on social media or are you creating activities ON social media?
  • Are you just sharing worship services on social media or are you learning how to worship ON social media?
  • Are you only telling people about your prayer and service via social or are you inviting people to pray and serve and give with you THROUGH social media?

There is a difference between telling people about your church online and actually learning to BE church online. The difference is worth discovering.
